Avianca Flight 052 - runs out of fuel
This accident happened in 1990. An Avianca Boeing 707 ran out of fuel after a failed attempt to land at JFK airport in New York. Eight of the nine crew members and 65 of the 149 passengers on board were killed. The flight crew failed to properly declare a fuel emergency. When asked by ATC if they had enough fuel the pilot replied, "I guess so, thank you very much." We may never know the factors behind this lack of assertiveness by the flight crew. Was language a factor? Would it have happened if the flight crew and the controller were both using their native languages?
